Bold and Bizarre Games Bulletin | July

It's the third Thursday of the month (Thirdsday) - Bulletin day - probably the best day of any given month. A day to celebrate the eccentricities and peculiarities we've found on our pilgrimage across the vast plains of indie.

As a reminder there is no update to Puzzletrunk this month, but if you're looking for sustenance for that puzzle-hungry brain of yours, we have just launched Occlude; our game of occult-solitaire, which features seven rituals (or puzzles) disguised as the classic card game.

Ok, the Bulletin train is now departing, all aboard 🚂

#1 One Eyed Likho

Coming July 28, Steam |Morteshka

Look at this thing. Dark, unsettling, beautiful. One-Eyed Likho absolutely floored me when I first stumbled across it. And thankfully the wait between seeing those first gifs and actually jumping into the game a-proper will not be long at all; it launches next week. One-Eyed Likho describes itself as a "grim first-person horror adventure set in a world inspired by a dark, Slavic fairy tale."

#2 Brevsky's Library

Out Now, Itch.io| Vuk Dobric

Library's are wondrous, whimsical institutions - vital cornerstones of any healthy community. They can also be quite terrifying in the right light, as proved in Vuk Dobric's recent game, which has you working in an unsettling library for its owner, My Brevsky. The game is short with a strong sense of atmosphere, and it's also Pay What You Want. So go support something weird and interesting.

#3 Demonic Mahjong

Out Now, Steam| Boxed Lightning Games

Having just released a horror-themed solitaire game, it would be remiss of me not to shout-out Demonic Mahjong; a vibrant take on the classic game of Mahjong, infused with a healthy does of demons and eccentric Chinese-anime vibes. I will not claim to be all too familiar with the intricacies of Mahjong, but this seems like as good an entry point as any other.

#4 The Drifter

#4 Out Now, Steam | Powerhoof, Dave Lloyd

A murdered drifter awakens, thrust back into the world of the living seconds before the fateful killing - and is then immediately on the run, forced to work out the complicated sequence of events that lead to his death. The Drifter has been making notable waves in Adventure game communities, with a fresh, fast-paced take on the genre, and intricate pixel art that gives the game real production value.

#5 All Living Things

Coming Soon, Steam | MOXO

All Living Things is a puzzle game, yes, but it's also an animated art-book, and honestly a piece of high-art in its own right. Even in this early form (there's a demo available on Steam), the look and feel of the game is a triumph. MOXO has thrown itself fully into the source material (The Ripley Scroll, a 15th-century alchemical manuscript), and while the puzzles are abstract, the subtext and mystery that contextualises the challenges makes it feel all the more meaningful.
